To Priest, Religious and Lay Faithful of the Archdiocese of Accra

Dearly Beloved,

COLLECTIONS FOR WEDDINGS AND FUNERALS

Peace be with you.

One issue that has been raised in almost all the parishes or churches I have visited is the taking of second collections as donations to couples at weddings and second collections as donations to bereaved families at funeral Masses. Here, a bereaved family refers to family members who are primarily responsible for the funeral expenses of the deceased.

I have already consulted with my College of Consultors and Council of Priests on this issue. Subsequently, on the 18th November 2020, I had the opportunity to consult a larger assembly of Priests meeting at the Catholic Institute of Business and Technology, Adabraka.

I hereby, therefore, decree that effective the First Sunday of Advent, 2020, second collections should be taken in all parishes and stations during weddings and funerals and the amounts realised be given in full, without counting, to the couples or the bereaved families as the case may be. This is to thank and show our love, appreciation and concern for them.

I remain,

Sincerely yours, Most Rev. John Bonaventure KWOFIE, C.S.Sp.,

Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra.
